What is an EDF file?
An EDF, Engine Data File, is the digital backup of your Evinrude EMM: the calibration, configuration and serial-number data that make the module unique to your engine. Think of it as a save-game for the brain of your outboard. This page explains what it is, and what to do if you do not have yours.

The Engine Data File, in plain language
EDF stands for Engine Data File. It is the file format used by Evinrude Diagnostics, the official BRP service software for Evinrude E-TEC and Ficht outboards, to store a complete snapshot of an Engine Management Module (EMM).
Each EDF is tied to one specific engine. It holds the engine serial number, the EMM software (the "engine map"), the injector data and the operating history that make the module unique to your outboard. Without the right data, an EMM is just a generic box of electronics.
Because of that, the EDF is the single most important file to have before any EMM service, recovery or replacement. If the data is lost, the engine may not run correctly, or may not run at all.
What an EDF file contains
A single .edf file bundles everything the diagnostic software needs to rebuild or transfer an EMM.
Engine serial number
The unique identifier that links the EMM to your physical outboard and its model year.
EMM software / engine map
The calibration and fuel/ignition mapping that controls how your specific engine runs.
Injector data
The per-injector calibration values the EMM uses to fire each fuel injector accurately.
Operating history
Hours, fault history and stored diagnostic data captured at the moment the file was created.
How an EDF file is created
Whenever a technician connects to an engine with Evinrude Diagnostics 5, the software automatically generates an EDF and saves it to the export folder on the PC (typically C:\ProgramData\BRP\EvDiag5\Export). A file can also be created manually from the History screen with the "Create EDF" button.
During an EMM recovery or replacement, the software loads a cold test and then writes the stored EDF back onto the module, restoring the original serial number, software and settings so the new or recovered EMM behaves exactly like the one it replaced.

Why the EDF file is so important
For Evinrude owners and workshops, having a current EDF on file is the difference between a smooth repair and a stranded boat.
