How to Unlock More HP on an Evinrude E-TEC
Evinrude set E-TEC horsepower with EMM software, not hardware. Here is the complete map of the proven HP upgrades, how to check eligibility, and what each one costs.
Evinrude built its E-TEC outboards on a small number of shared engine blocks, then set the horsepower with software. A 15 and a 30, a 40 and a 60, a 75 and a 90: in each of those pairs the castings, the pistons, and the fuel system are the same part on the bench. What separates them is the calibration loaded into the Engine Management Module, the EMM. Reflash that calibration and the engine runs at the higher factory rating on the hardware you already own.
That is the whole idea behind an EMM HP upgrade. You are not bolting on parts or leaning on a piggyback box. You are replacing the factory map with the factory map Evinrude used for the stronger version of the identical engine. Hardware Care has tuned over 100 EMMs this way, and the EMM tuning hub is the place to start if you want the short version.
Why the shared block matters
Because the block is common to both ratings, the higher output was designed, tested, and rated by Evinrude on that exact hardware. The cooling, the crank, and the exhaust were specified for the top of the range. A reflash simply asks the engine to do what its stronger twin already did off the production line. That is why we call it real rated power and not a display trick: the EMM commands more fuel and different timing, and the tachometer reads it because the engine is genuinely making it.
The known upgrade paths
The shared-block families give a handful of proven jumps. Each one has its own page with the specifics for that engine.
| Path | Block | Gain | Water valve |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 to 30 HP | small | +15 HP | Not needed |
| 25 to 30 HP | small | +5 HP | Not needed |
| 40 to 50 HP | mid | +10 HP | Not needed |
| 40 to 60 HP | mid | +20 HP | Thermostatic valve required |
| 75 to 90 HP | big | +15 HP | Not needed |
One thing to plan for: adding real horsepower can mean your current propeller is no longer the right match. To get the full benefit of the extra power, you may need to fit a different propeller, and a dealer can help you size it.
Check your eligibility by part number
The part number is printed on the EMM label. Because the same number is shared by the lower and higher variant of a block, one number can map to more than one target, so we confirm exact eligibility per part number before anything is loaded. Read the number off the label, send it to us, and we tell you which rating your unit can take.
Remote or mail-in
There are two ways to have it done, and both reach the same result.
The remote service never takes the EMM off the boat. You sit at the dock with a Windows laptop, a diagnostic cable, a bootstrap cable, a working internet connection, and a charged battery, and we reflash live in one session that usually runs under an hour.
The mail-in route is just as simple. Send us the EMM and we typically reflash it and put it back in the post within about three days of it arriving. With mail-in you pay carriage both ways (sending the EMM in and getting it back), whereas the remote option ships nothing because the EMM stays on the boat.
What it costs
Prices are fixed and quoted ex VAT.
- Remote reflash: 199 euro.
- Remote reflash with our bootstrap and diagnostic cable kit: 275 euro.
- Mail-in reflash: 199 euro.
- Mail-in reflash with a diagnostic cable: 250 euro.
Is it safe on an older engine?
Evinrude and BRP ended production in 2020, so most E-TEC outboards are now out of manufacturer warranty, and that is exactly why owners look at this. The reflash stays inside factory calibration, so the engine only does what its stronger factory twin already did off the production line. Hardware Care works from Nieuwkuijk in the Netherlands and serves owners worldwide by DHL Express, so where your boat sits does not change what is possible.
