How long does an EMM repair take?

Most repairs are done within 1–2 weeks of the module arriving. On top of that comes shipping both ways and, from outside the EU, customs. Pick where you ship from and which module you have.

Shipping from somewhere else? Transit times and customs by country

  1. 1

    Shipping to us

DHL Express on our account, 2–3 business days. We book the pickup at your address.

  2. 2

    Customs

We prepare the papers and declare the module as a repair rather than a sale. Wrong paperwork is the usual reason a module sits at customs, which is why non-EU shipments go on our DHL account.

  3. 3

    Under repair

Diagnosis on the test bench, the repair, then re-sealing. Most modules are done within 1–2 weeks.

With the current queue: E-TEC 1–2 weeks, Ficht 2½–3½ weeks.

  4. 4

    Invoice

When the repair is finished we send the invoice. The module ships once it is paid.

  5. 5

    Shipping back

DHL Express with tracking, 2–3 business days.

From the US, shipping both ways takes roughly 6–10 business days, pickup and customs included.

What can make it take longer

A fault we have to chase, or a part we have to wait for, can add one to three weeks. The usual causes:

An unknown or second fault.

If you are not sure what is wrong, or diagnosis turns up more than the reported fault, the repair takes longer. You hear from us once the module has been on the test bench.

Ficht battery faults.

A bad battery or charging fault can damage a Ficht EMM beyond repair. We then have to find a replacement module.

Waiting on a part.

Common components are on the shelf, but a rare one can mean a wait.

A long queue.

When the workshop is busy we add a week to our quoted times. The figures on this page and on the submit form already include it.

Why it is faster than it used to be

Turnaround used to depend on which parts and how much bench space we had. These are the changes that brought it down.

Our previous Hardware Care workshop and office, in use until the 2025 move.
  1. 2018

    The first repair

A 75 HP died on a blown fuse. We opened the EMM, repaired it, and then found owners everywhere stuck with the same fault and nowhere to send it.

  2. 2019–2023

    A proper workshop

The spare-time project got its own office, test gear and parts on the shelf. Modules started coming in from the rest of Europe, then from further afield.

  3. 2024

The part we could not buy

One component could no longer be bought anywhere, and repairs that needed it stalled for weeks while we hunted for donor EMMs. We reverse-engineered it and now make our own. A customer ran ours on one engine of a twin 225 E-TEC, with a factory BRP module on the other, and pushed both hard. Ours held up.

  4. 2025

    The move

We moved to a bigger workshop. The building work ran months over and the tools stayed boxed up longer than planned, but the bench is now laid out for the way we repair.

  5. 2025–2026

    Test bench and sealing

We built our own test bench, which runs an EMM under load and finds the fault in minutes, and rebuilt the vulcanizing process we use to re-seal the board.

Fast, kept well informed, fixed the issue. Had to pay VAT charge when importing back to the UK which I hadn't factored into the costs, but still better value than a new one.
